Metropolitan Wind Symphony Winter Concert: At the Movies, Lexington, MA
Sunday, March 5 1:00 - 5:30 PM Cost -- $34 includes transportation and concert
After a brief conductor's talk previewing the concert, the group will open with music from the early days of the silver screen, beginning with Cartoon. Next, from the early "talkie" days, an overture to the Errol Flynn film, The Sea Hawk. Then they will show two film clips with the music that accompanied them: The Parade of the Charioteers from Ben-Hur, and the Laurel and Hardy film Double Whoopie. Following intermission, they'll get more modern with Dana Wilson's Shortcut Home, and Richard Marriott's sweeping Central Park Suite.

La Traviata is regarded as one of Verdi's finest works. The opera tells the story of the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valery, one of opera's greatest heroines, based on the real-life courtesan Marie Duplessis, who died in 1847 at the age of 23.

The show starts when a divorced slob invites a group of the boys over for cards. One of the guests, who happens to be very meticulous, has just separated from his wife. The slob and the neat-freak decide to share an apartment; but patterns in their own marriages begin to reappear with hilarious results.

The program will open with Hector Berlioz's alternately romantic and swashbuckling Le Corsaire Overture. The title is a reference to James Fenimore Cooper's The Red Rover ("Le Corsaire Rouge"). Next, Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, Pastoral, is his only explicitly programmatic symphony, a fundamentally cheerful work illustrating a sojourn in the country side. After the concert we will enjoy a late lunch at Bellino's in Wakefield.
